Black History Month

Rumba Orisha is pleased to offer a special Black History Month presentation for secondary schools, colleges, libraries, community projects and other events. This can stand alone or work neatly with any of our workshops and performances for a rich and multilayered event that engages minds and moves spirits.

Afro-Atlantic Drumsong Journeys: an interactive workshop/talk lasting 1-2 hours.

Using a combination of Powerpoint slides, audio recordings, drumming and singing this interactive talk traces the connections between Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas as we follow the journey of the drum.

More informative than a straightforward music workshop and more entertaining than a standard lecture Drumsong Journeys is designed to be accessible for a wide audience.

Participants will learn about the traditional music and spiritual traditions of West and Central Africa that existed prior to Atlantic slavery. We will see how certain cultures, especially Yoruba, Fon and Congo, were able to maintain their music and religions in Cuba, Haiti, Brazil and elsewhere, and learn some songs and rhythms that came straight off the boats which are still being played to this day.

Finally, we will look at how the music of the Diaspora flowed back to Africa, influencing modern popular music from Senegal to the Congo.

Led by percussionist and ethnomusicologist Crispin Robinson this presentation can be tailored to suit different audiences large or small, old or young.
